He had absolutely no doubt in his mind that he could navigate them safely off the planet and through the armada. It's not his first rodeo, after all. Not even the first time he's been one ship against an enemy fleet. This would be a piece of cake.
So why not make it more difficult for himself and try to save as many others as possible.
